poor sound from aux input

Recently connected my IPOD to an older pioneer head unit with aux input. I have an IPOD photo and am using the dock connector with the belkin auto kit. I have no ground loop buzz, but the sound is flat and completely lacking any bass and at higher volumes my speakers have a great deal of distortion, however at low volume the sound is clear. I expect my CD player on my head unit to sound better, but even the radio has better quality sound. I have played with EQ settings on both the IPOD and head unit and no luck. Does anybody have any ideas or is this the type sound quality I should expect. Thanks.

Is that the belkin charger with a built in amplifier? If so, I'd try a line-out adaptor that has no amplifier.

You should expect quality that is at least equal to the CD player.
