Thank you. I recently ordered a new 20GB colour along with an AirPlay. Order placed July 19 9pm, arrived July 21 1pm, with free shipping. Not bad!
I decided to purchase the AirPlay instead of the iTrip mainly because of the ease of use issue, but I'm starting to think it was a bad idea. I tried it out in the car earlier this evening (Mazda Tribute GT, for interest's sake). There are only a couple of unused frequencies in this area, and the AirPlay provides passable sound quality on either of them. However, I get a constant high-pitched whining on *all* frequencies, and it drives me nuts. It dies down occasionally at random, but always returns. The only time I can't really hear it is in really loud parts of the music, but it's still there in the background. Listening to quiet music is unbearable.
I've been going through various AirPlay threads here, and it seems many other people have had the same problem. I also read a post by the CEO of XtremeMac saying it was an early-run issue and had been fixed, but I'm not so sure about that. Why would Apple still be selling the defective units now? He claims returning it for a new one would fix the problem - has anyone else had it remedied with a new unit?
I'm wondering whether I should give up on the AirPlay and just wait for the new iTrip LCD in August. It does look fairly nice, and I don't recall any of my friends with original iTrips having any whining issues with their units. I took a look at Apple's return policy, and it seems they charge a 10% restocking fee on all opened returns. Is that policy set in stone? I would probably be willing to accept credit towards the new iTrip whenever it's released. Keeping this particular AirPlay is really not an option. I can't live with the horrible whining it produces!
On a more positive note, the new iPod is superb. I really like the colour screen, and I've been ripping CDs like a maniac all night. I'll probably replace the stock earphones because I find them uncomfortable, but overall I'm quite satisfied. Kudos to Apple! :)
