Windows blue screen on update

I noticed some freezing on my iPod 4G so after trying a few resets, I decided to restore factory settings on the device. Now when I try to synchronize the device with my iTunes music, I get partially through the process, and then one of those ugly windows "blue screens" appears. I restarted my computer, tried to synch again -- it starts from where it left off, but again i get the blue screen.

I've tried to use the scandisk function via windows, but that gives me the same error. Is there a scan disk function on the iPod itself, or should I just be sending the device in for repair?
