duplicates on ipod only

i don't use itunes to manage my collection, but i do use it to transfer songs manually to the ipod (bigger collection than capacity of the ipod). i've had a host of problems recently and have had to restore a couple of times in the past week. the new one i'm running up against is that some songs are duplicated on the ipod. exact same ID3 tags. is there a way to detect and automatically delete the dupes? all the solutions i've found are for dupes in itunes.
