ipod 40 gig power problems

i think this is the right forum, i bought a ipod 40 gig, probably 6 months old or so from a friend, he never used it so i bought it from him. It worked great initially, but now, it isnt looking as good:( i connect it with firewire, (not a big fan of USB) and it works fine, but as soon as i un mount it, it shuts off, not to be turned on again. It is VERY disappointing, but i dont know what to do. It says the battery is fully charged, i can do everything on it, play games, listen to music... etc. etc. so i dont know if anyone else has had the problem, or if anyone else can help me even, but i just want a simple (free) solution.:confused:

Do you have an ac power adapter for your iPod? If so, have you tried charging via ac to see if the iPod will hold a charge that way?
