I will be turning 16 in about 5 months or so and I am wanting to learn about cars and how they work. All the magazines I have checked out are basically ads all for parts and such. With the exception of an article here and there. Are there any magazines or books that will tell me things that are needed to know about the car and others that will tell me how the car itself works?

I'd do plenty of research on the web, once you're sure about the exact model of car you'll buy, you can then buy a specific book at an auto part store that will tell you every last detail of your car.

if you go out and buy those import tuning mags or mistang 5.0 junk your most likely to rice your car....i.e. make your car look gaudy as all heck and be slower than stock because all of that carbon fiber vinly on your triple deck ironing board " spoiler" is slowing you down but getn you mad props at the super market

I am not looking for ricer stuff. I just want to learn more about cars. Thank you soldier I must have missed this section of howstuffworks when I checked the site.

I agree on the forums idea. I have a 98 Buick Regal GS, and I was blown away by what people have done to them on the RegalGS.org forum. We have some cars doing 11-second quarter miles! I've learned a lot there, about cars in general, and a lot specifically about my car.

My second best resource for car knowledge is tearing down a small engine and rebuilding it. I found an ancient (1970-ish) outboard motor for a canoe in my dad's garage, and in high school, I tore it apart, and slowly rebuilt it, and got it running very nicely. It tought me a lot about the mechanics of engine design.

Any particular car you're interested in?

Well as of now I am quite interested in the Subaru WRX. That may very well change as time goes on. I used to be into wanting an Audi but decided after learning a bit more about them, that they can be trouble.
