I don't get it. whenever I try to to connect my iPod to the computer recently, it won't connect. I open Itunes and then plug in my my iPod via USB and the iPod makes a spinning noise and then goes *ca-kunk*. then it'll spin again and once it starts going it goes *ca-kunk*. This constantly repeats itself and never stops until i unplug it. The funny thing is that i can play my music fine, but I have no way of getting music on the damn thing, or backing it up. Since this started happening, i have only managed to get it working ONCE after using the restart (holding Menu and the white button) and shaking it. the method hasn't worked since. I have a new generation 40GB Ipod.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem may be? I'm really hoping i didn't damage the hard drive somehow, as i really haven't used it in a violent manner (aka, throwing it or dropping it).

That really sounds like a dodgy hard drive. I'd fill out a service request on the Apple website (assuming it's still in warranty). Hard drives do fail - even if you do treat them with care.
