GARY, 12, HANGS HIMSELF AFTER MUM CONFISCATES HIS PLAYSTATION
By Jan Disley
A BOY aged 12 who was sent to his room and banned from using the PlayStation hanged himself.
Gary Lloyd had been told off by mum Gillian after having a detention at school, an inquest heard yesterday.
She later went to look in on him because no noise was coming from the room and found him hanging by his school tie from the top of a bunk bed.
Recording an accidental death verdict, deputy coroner Christopher Welton told the hearing in Stockport, Greater Manchester, he believed Gary was playing an attention-seeking prank that went "disastrously wrong".
The inquest heard Gary, who went to Werneth Secondary in Stockport, had been smiling when he left school.
Teacher Pradeep De, who supervised his detention given for not doing his homework and being late to school, said Gary was happy after seeing a former teacher.
But when he got home late Gary argued with his mum.
She went to look in on him after making tea and found him hanging. She and partner Leon Ball lifted him down and she tried to resuscitate him while Leon dialled 999.
Gary was declared dead later at hospital.
The inquest heard Mr Ball had once attempted suicide and Mr Welton said Gary saw it as a good way to attract attention.
Describing the boy as a "loveable rogue", he said, "he'd had his PlayStation taken away and he'd been chastised for being naughty.
"He'd seen a situation with his mother's partner that had attracted attention to him after he'd had a bit of a problem.
"He knew his mother would be coming up soon to find him.
"Sometimes it can be very easy to kill yourself with a ligature, if it's tied in a certain way it can happen very quickly and unexpectedly.""
After the inquest, Mrs Lloyd, from Stockport, said Gary, the eldest of her three children, was a very happy boy.
His death on October 13 last year was "a bolt from the blue".
Werneth Secondary said his death was met with "great sadness and disbelief".

What a disgustingly disrespectful attitude... this was a 12 year-old kid in a tragic accident. Sheesh.

That's a really classy thing to say about some poor misguided kid... and this is coming from a 25 year old guy working graveyard shift at a funeral home in Nowhereville U.S.A., you're not exactly one to speak.
It's a sad commentary on this kid's home life that he'd take his own life over the confiscation of something so petty as a PlayStation.

I feel as though I must agree with you. Not exactly a stable, well rounded kid it would seem. I do feel sorry for his parents though, especially his mother. She must be blaming herself although that's not the right thing to do.

It's iTunes XHTML Playlist... available for Windows, Mac, or Linux.
The official site (http://spark.is-a-geek.net/itunesxhtmlplaylist/) appears to be down for the moment, but you could probably find it on VersionTracker or Download.com.
It looked awesome on your site. Thanks!
Tragic story, but there was nothing anyone could do to prevent it. You cannot condone the parents for their actions.

Tragic story, but I don't think pretending to hang yourself/commit suicide is a good way to get attention

but really now, is there a serious way to "pretend" a hanging?

maybe if you use like a harness and some heavy duty 300 lb fishing wire attached to a roof truss and the tie can act as the " hanging" object you should be fine....im not telling you to do this im just tryin to see how it would be done

O please, get over it. If the kid was so wrapped up in his PS2 that he had to kill himself over it he had serious issues anyhow.

That is unbelievably sad... Not because he committed suicide, but for the fact that he hung himself over a PS2. Seriously, hardcore gamer or not, its the most stupid thing any1 could do.

So stupid. And even though it was disrespectful to the boy and his family, the comment about the Xbox was pretty funny.

He didn't kill himself because he was without his playstation for a day, he was trying to get some pity because he got into trouble. He probably didn't intend to die. My brother did the exact same thing when he got caught sneaking beer into the house...
The lack of compassion in this thread amazes me.

A kid in my town nearly died from a prank hanging, it was on halloween he had the nuse tied from the tree and he stood on a bucket that was covered up with leaves, the bucket fell out from under him and he almost died , his friends got him down in time.

It's not a lack of compassion.
Do I feel sorry for the kids parents? Most Definitely. Is this a horrible thing? Absolutely. Do I feel sorry for a kid who needed so much attention because of a video game that he tried to fake killing himself (and then killed himself) over it? Absolutely not. If he was that desperate for attention and that distraught that he had to take that route, then there was something else wrong with him well. Don't promote stupidity by feeling sorry for the stupid ones.

That little boy obviously lacked some love in that household. I don't know wheather the partner (I notice they didn't say husband) got in the middle of the kid & his mom. Kid's get jealous when another male (who isn't their father) steps into the picture. I wonder if they had him in counseling. Anyway, very sad. What a terrible thing to do over material posessions.

That's who you should feel most sorry for! This was a 12 year old boy who wasn't smart enough to realize what he was doing. It was a terrible mistake, and I don't know how you can say that feeling sorry for such a mixed up little boy "promotes stupidity."

Obviously you don't know many 12 year olds. I'll bet he knew exactly what he was doing, although I doubt he actually intended to kill himself.
It's called "Natural Selection", do a Google search for it....

I know plenty of 20-somethings who don't know what they're doing. Whether he intended to kill himself or not, he did NOT fully understand the consequences of what he did. I have a hard time believing anyone who commits suicide fully understands the finality of it. Either that, or they know something I don't know. Are you proposing that this 12 year old boy somehow had knowledge of the afterlife far superior to most of us? (Not beliefs, knowledge). Or was he just a poor kid, and it's a terrible shame he lost his life? It infuriates me to have to argue that you should pity this kid...

No, I simply mean that there are plenty of smart 12 year olds out there who fully understand that killing yourself over a PS2 is just plan dumb. There are plenty of 12 year olds who know that trying to kill yourself over a PS2 in order to get attention or in an attempt to get said PS2 back is dumb.
I agree that he may not have fully understood the consequences when it came to actually killing himself, but I certainly believe he understood the consequences of trying to kill himself in order to scare his mother into giving it back to him. He knew what reaction he wanted from his Mom, and he knew how to get the reaction he wanted. Unfortunately for him he apparently bungled the attempt and actually killed himself, which is just plain stupid. It's not a shame, it is perhaps a fortuitous event. The Human Gene pool is much better off without this kid growing up to pollute it any further than it already is. We can only hope he was an only child and neither of his parents tries their hand (no pun intended) at child bearing again.
Sorry if it infuriates you, but stupid people like this poor schmuck don't deserve my, or anyone's, pity. His Mom deserves our pity, but not him. Here she is simply trying to do what she thinks is the right thing for her kid (I assume) and he ends up offing himself. Bet she feels horrible. As a parent, my heart goes out to her, not to him.

Unbelievable and tragic.
The thread title did, however, mislead me. I thought the child took his own life because he couldn't live without a playstation for a few days, which would have provoked a lot of comments from me about the way society is raising children to be dependent on material goods.
I suppose those comments are unfounded.
It is a truly tragic thing a) that this happened of course and b) that this child felt the need to win his mother's love back by pretending to play suicide. Coming from someone who has had friends attempt suicide, it truly is unsettling.

Kid should've watched the first part of the Goonies for the perfect example of a fake hanging.
