Share your stories of dropping your iPod.
Did it survive? Did you cry? Where did it happen? Did you curse loudly and threateningly in a crowded public area?
Also, share your methods of preventing "iAccidents". Do you use skins? Do you hate skins? Cases?
Most unbelievable survival story wins a banana.

No...but the other day I had the iPod & the dock in my hand..went to slip them into my pocket & one fell & hit the ground. I was afraid to look...but it ended up being the dock :o

I've never dropped my baby...but I once had a dream that I did...
Kind of weird, but I was on a roller coaster and I was listening to some tunes and the coaster went over a bump and... weeeeeeeee ...THUMP! Awful. I woke up in a sweat and genuinely freaked out. :)

I droped it this morning! I was so scared. It slipped out of my hands, hit the wall, skimmed the tabe and landed on the floor. Luckily it was carpet and i had my brand new Speck FlipStand on. It got some scratches but the ipod was just fine.
The flipstand is in my opinion quite a good case. It doesnt comprimise the appearance of the ipod and protects it more than some others. It alot like the isee for the origional ipods.

i droped mine down a flight of stair, an i screamed the whole time it was falling. it was in slow motion as i wiped it out of my pocket, and watched fall, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" i shouted. it the stairs in its black leather case and bouched all the way down. thank god it still works, did get a nice dent from it though....

To mookiemeister,
True. I think most of us treat our 'Pods like babies, but that doesn't mean you don't eventually let a friend hold your little one. Which is what I did. (People start avoiding you when they think you're too good to let them hold your "precious little iPod.") And the little f***er dropped my baby on the ground. All of about three feet. And, oh yes, it survived, iSkin case and all (cosmetics only), but it whizzed and whirred long after that, until I got it repaired. Too bad my friend's too cocky and his insurance doesn't cover damages to small infants ... er, iPods. So I had to foot that bill myself.
Meanwhile, I'm proud to report that my iPod was trooper enough to withstand even my own abuse when I spilled a Sprite right on her face. Thought that thing was gonna be ##### from the get-go, but SOMEHOW it survived. Though the buttons were admittedly a little sticky for a while (and continue to be). But I had it cleaned. And I had to foot that bill, too.
Thank Jobs for the super duper iPod.
w00t w00t!
I haven't dropped mine, but I think the "protect it like a baby" metgod is a little extreme. Usually I play it with shuffle on, and leave it in my pocket.

I unplugged it from the computer, and was carrying it back to my room when it just slid out of my hands (So #### silky smooth...) and hit the floor. I panicked.. but it was working fine, and not dented either. We have a wooden floor with a rug.. and it just landed on the edge of the rug :)
It was off at the time aswell.. so maybe cuz the hard drive wasnt spinning that helped.. idk.
Anyways.. funny it always seemed like such a big deal to me that I dropped my iPod.. I drop everything else.. my phone, my cd walkman (when I used it) etc and don't really care.
I let my friends use it.. and when one of them gave the iPod back all the songs were skipping.. dunno what she did to it but she won't be using it again :D

You're a brave one, Sypher. I might let someone listen to my iPod; but I doubt I'd let them borrow it. Not without some kind of written contract, at least. Friends have a way of getting out of $500 accidents it seems.
So, did you get it repaired?
Sypher
02-18-2004, 09:31 AM
Nah, didnt need repairing.. I just kept on resetting it, and eventually the songs starting playing properly.

Just happened yesterday...had it on my desk at work, went to move something and in slow motion I saw my precious pod flip up in the air, bounce off of a chair and then hit the floor. Thankfully I had it in its iSkin so it survived unscratched.

I dropped mine last week. I was in my kitchen when it fell out of my hand. Landed on the linoleum floor. It's protected by an iSkin EXO2. No visible damage although I had to re-install it on the computer because it wouldn't recognize. Had to do this twice when I wanted to import new songs into the 'pod. Works like new now...WHEW!!!
I dropped my old 2G iPod as i was getting into a bus, watched horror struck as it fell onto the road and got run over by a motorbike.I jumped out of the bus, nearly getting run over myself..and it was still working! Not even a dent on it!It was in the black apple case. Also dropped in on a carpeted floor once and it still worked perfectly. Wasnt so lucky the third time though..had it on my lap in the car and dropped in on the concrete floor of the parking lot while getting out..it skipped songs for a couple of months and then i got a disk fail icon.
Luckily, I had a service plan on it, and it was replaced with a NEW 3G iPod..am i glad i paid for that service plan!
I take care of this new one like a baby..

This is by far the most alarming thread I've read to date. Such horror stories. I'm gonna have to find a god of some sort and start praying to it for my precious' safety.
My your iPods never meet an untimely end.
I did drop mine, luckily the Ipod was ok, infact my foot came out worse, I had 3 bruised toes, but what are body parts? they can be cloned but ya Ipod protect it with ya life....

Has anyone ever dropped it? Do you know how resilient the hard drive is to that type of abuse?

I've some did somewhere here in the forums before. One even fell 3ft on concrete and his ipod still worked fine. Others had a "nicer" fall but got broken immediately. I never dropped mine, but we can never be too careful.... Nevertheless, I take really good care of it for it's not a cheap toy. Love your iPod and it will love you back. :)

Well, the first week I had mine, it dropped (sans case) about 5 feet onto some hard foam. It's that stuff that they put underneath workout equipment. I had placed my iPod into a cradle built into a stairclimber thinking it was perfect. Well, I couldn't see that the bottom of the cradle was half open. My iPod slipped through, the fall only broken slightly by the headphone jack hanging on, then releasing. As you can imagine, at that height it thumped the foam pretty hard, and you've never seen someone jump off of a machine so fast. Luckily, the only difference I could detect was a slight bowing of the case at the bottom, and a push corrected that. No hard drive damage, and it has played perfectly ever since.
Darrell

BTW, It would likely do more harm to the hard drive if it would be spinning at the time it was dropped.

I once dropped my 5G ipod onto the floor at school. The scroll whell barely worked and I later noticed that the case was coming apart. I was able to push it back together and it's been fine since. I also dropped my Palm Pilot and damaged it. It slipped out of the case when I was standing at the top of the steps. It got a few cracks and a screw broke, but it still works. My 15G 3Gen iPod has fallen small distantance before, but it's been fine.

i dropped it out of a car onto the bitumen road, whilst sitting in a ute. (thankfully car was not moving) It was in its black case soft felty-thingy case (not the hard one) It wasn't turned on. I barely had owned it for a week....
-> Doesn't seem to be any damage at all, although sometimes i worry that it makes more hard-drive whirring and noise than it is supposed to (and the occasional ...err... suuuuck sound when starting to spin) - i've never had another ipod in my hands so i'm not sure if mine is ok and these sounds are normal.

I drop that sucker almost on a regular basis. I have a habit of sticking it in my pocket, then forgetting about it when I bend over to get something. Fortunately, it's sturdier than it seems and only has a few scratches to show for all the mistreatment it's been through.

Yes, I dropped mini-munch once.... I was pulling it off my belt at school and my hand slipped, causing poor little mini to take a ride halfway across the room, then do battle with the tile floor. He won, but he was one HECK of a battle scar on his head! (A dent) Before this happened I was like, I'm never covering this beauty with a case, but know I am going to, because.... yah. Or I could just duct tape it to myself....

Only "slightly" and I was terrified I'd bust it! Afterall hard
drives are not the most robust of mechanical instruments are they??
Dropped my 2G once. It was on the kitchen counter with the itrip going - playing "Middlesex" while I was cooking up something. I remember I slid the cutting board to the sink, hit the edge of the ipod and off it went, hit the lid of the garbage can and bounce twice on the tile floor. (what a sick, sick feeling I had...the death of $300).
But the thing never missed a beat, kept playing the book, the itrip still worked, etc. Insane.

Dropped my Mini - close call I hope...
(have this posted in 'mini probs' before I saw this thread...
Dropped my mini face down at the gym today while it was playing. I was changing artists when I dropped it.
Then I could not press play/pause. I looked closely and noticed the scroll wheel was pushed in at the bottom. I was bumming. It was still playing but not responding to play/pause action.
So being the impatient brut that I am, I lightly tapped the unit face down on a surface. The wheel returned to its proper position, and has worked fine since.
Has this happened to anyone yet?
Now I am thinking about one of those skins to protect. BUT I love the belt clip. I do NOT want a lanyard!!
(I have since seen the iskin for mini coming soon. I WILL GET ONE!!)

My ipod must be made of titanium because it dropped out of my pocket faster than a speeding bullet. It all happened a few days ago, I was waiting at the bus stop to go to work and right as I round the corner I see the bus and one last person boarding it. I then proceed to speed up across the street running full stride for about 200m during all this my i pod falls straight out of my jacket pocket (damn pockets with no zippers) and hits the ground like a flash of lighning hitting the earth, then it proceeds to rattle forward. I then pick it up notice 3 giant dents in each of the corners as well as a few scratches on the screen. To my amazement it still works perfectly fine.

The other day I was putting a couple of ipods (not in cases) on a shelf about two foot high. The first one slipped and hit the hard floor and as I picked it up and put it on the shelf the other one fell!
Both still work fine (although my nerves are a little shot).

I have been clumsy with my iPod on occasion. I have been very lucky though .. the furthest it's fallen is from my hand to my desktop. It was on and playing, and was not in the case, but the unit took the shock without missing a beat. (No pun intended)
Since then I try to keep it in its case at all times. I have one of those Belkin flip cases that allows it to be docked without taking it out of the case. (Too bad the InMotion doesn't .. )

I've never dropped mine more than a couple inches, and it was always onto something soft, and it was in its Vaja case too. So no problems with mine.
However, I saw a kid at school drop his out of his hands (while he was standing up) straight onto the asphalt, no case. I think it works, as I still see him listening to it, but it'll be broken sooner or later. He really doesn't take very good care of it at all. He got it for Christmas, and it's already scratched/dented to hell on the front and back.

I have dropped it once. I have the dock up on my bookcase on the wall and one day I accidentally knocked it out and it fell from the dock hit the desk then bounced onto the floor. No external damage and as far as I can tell no HD damage.
The iPod does not look very strong though and around the price it is you would probably be best off not claiming off insurance because it would end up costing you more. I also left it on the bus before, luckily the driver spotted it and I was able to pick it up from the main depot, but boy was I scared in that short period of time I had lost my iPod :(.

Unforunately, I dropped my ipod mini silver twice. Once when I didn't even know I was holding it. Both were from about 4 feet above the ground. I have two dents on both the top right corner and bottom right corner of the ipod.
Also, I have scratched the screen somehow and it is noticable in the light. It seems as if there is a nasty black line running through the ipod mini wheel. It might have been from a pen that had been in my pocket. Wherever I put my ipod it gets damaged. In my pocket, on my belt, in my jacket, in my bag. I need a bullet proof case. The ipod minis are not very durable.
I only hope that this ipod breaks down soon so I can get it replaced. I only had one freeze problem that required me to force a reboot.
Also, I lost about 4 pairs of black earbud foam pieces.

Dropping an iPod (or any other handheld gadget) is only a matter of time,
especially if you take it jogging or if you frequently take it out of your pocket
while you're walking long.
No-one expects to it to happen. Always get a decent protective cover.

I voted on this when I had just recently bought my iPod, and since then it has been dropped...TWICE!!! :(
I was riding my bike and I was leaning over to fix my shoe, and my backpack slid down my back and knocked my iPod off. I about cried as it fell on the cement.
Then, I was listening to it and dancing around in the hallway of my school, and it fell off. I think I need a better belt clip or something, seriously.
My dad had to reboot it the other night cause it was doing something weird that he'd never seen before when we were updating it, other than that, it's fine.

A couple of days ago I went to put my iPod back into my inside pocket but for some reason completely missed the pocket. It was at this moment that everything went in slow motion and I grabbed the headphones. The iPod fell to about a foot from the ground when the headphone cable reached full length and popped out of the jack leaving the iPod to hit the floor (albeit a bit slower) and bounce twice. It was in the black Apple case so only one of the corners is a bit scratched. I attempted to buff this out using some Brasso and managed mostly though they were pretty deep. It still works fine however - I never really doubted that it wouldn't. I trust it :)
Needless to say I have ordered an Evo skin in case this happens again.

Well, yesterday i dropped it again. I was walking under a subway and went to take the iPod out, and it slipped and hit the floor with substantial force. I just stood there for like 30 seconds staring at it on the ground, with my mouth open, I couldn't believe it. It's fine though.

Hmmm... Lets see... The first tike I dropped my iPod. Oh yeah. Well, you see, I was moving my iPod from nightstand to computer desk. And my dog got in the way. Oh yeah, did I mention that my iPod was in the dock? Well, it fell, hit my dog, and crashed to the floor (Dog is OK, not dogs were hurt in this story) and garphed up the screen.
Now, these days, its so scratched all over, its horrible. The fromnt os more scratched than the back.

The first night after I got songs on my iPod, I was listening to it in bed. The headphone and remote cords weren't as long as I thought they were and my iPod fell off of my bedside stand, in the dock, with no case. It fell softly to my carpeted floor and no harm done whatsoever. The top of the case did pop off a little and it scared me because I couldn't get the plug into it, but I just popped it back in place and everything is as good as new. Now the iSkin eVo protects it.....stupid apple case.

I believe in the "protect it like a baby" metaphor... but I still dropped it (for the very first time!) today.
I was pulling it out of its case to switch songs and let a friend jack in. It fell from my hand... I tried to catch it, but only slowed its fall... it hit my softish backpack, on the ground, and bounced/slid off it onto the floor... a scary moment.
I received a few laughs, though I didn't feel funny, and picked it up. My relief was great when it functioned, emerging from the incident unscathed.

man forget i've
dropped mine onto bitumen roads
crashed big time whist snowboarding and ipodding many times
seen it fall off my bed onto floor many times
had little children grab it, drop it, leave it in sinks, on toasters.
and its survived the lot.
OK so it has a few scratches, but i've learn't to accept the fact that its going to get scratches, if i protect it like its a babz i#m not going to be able to do all the things i want to do with my ipod, so i accept its going to happen and live with it.
but i've never dropped or smashed it whilst the drive has been spinning, so as a result my ipod still functions as if it were new!

Uhm.. I've dropped it quite a few times.. I've knocked it off my desk, dropped it when I was trying to get the belt clip off my belt, got entangled in the wires and tugged it off the table, etc.. it doesnt have any dents, and still works fine. I swear my heart stopped for a few seconds when I dropped it for the first time.. but now I'm not too bothered.

I heard of someone who wears his pod on his belt clip; and as he was sliding out of the car with Christmas packages the pod slipped off the clip and fell 1 foot to the soft asphalt. The story was that it froze up after that...don't know if he was able to fix it.
Lucky so far, never yet dropped my pod.

Gaaaahh! Such stories of terror... poor babies.
I've heard soooo much about "luckily i had the exo iskin" or "I must get the exo iskin." Does the iskin for the ipod mini work just as well?
Listening to my pod while it was charging in the dock and lyign down in ma bed. Reach over to plug my cellphone in and bam! The cord snags and the pod flies down the side and bangs the bedside table several times.
I stopped breathing although J-Kwon was still spouting... :p

I take the baby metaphor to extremes, unfortunately. I always have two hands on my iPod. No-one even touches it unless I'm right there watching (or else they may drop it and I'll never know). Borrowing it is completely out of the question.
Once I was at on a grass field throwing rocks, Bob Gibson-style (baseball fans know what I'm saying). After one particularly strong throw, it fell out of my pocket and landed on the grass. Thankfully, the springy soil and grass prevented any damage (that I've noticed, anyway). I didn't freak out, but if I ever dropped it on a hard surface from that height (3-4 feet), I'd definitely freak out completely. If anyone else ever dropped it, I'd kill them in a fit of rage, then find out the iPod still worked (uh-oh).

I was running on my 'dread'mill and i had it in the little spot on the console. My hand came down once and hit the ear bud cord. The left earbud came out and the iPod hit the track and spat out the back. I almost stepped on it. Praise the Lord, i didn't do that! I audibly said "F#@*!!!!!" Sorry to offend anybody. Then i checked for damage. Luckily too i had it in a BodyGlove? case. Nice cushion. It was fine. Never missed a beat. Needless to say, I didn't need to finish my 3 miles. My heart was pumping like an aerobics addict for about 4 hours after. It gave me nightmares for a week. My iPod costs more than the damn exercise machine. And i love it 100 time more.

Wow, jPod (^-^)v, you took the words right out of my mouth! I posted on this thread yesterday and said that I'd never really dropped my iPod seriously, but today I conincidentally (or not--???) dropped it. I was standing outside the mall waiting for a bus; I took my iPod out of my pocket to adjust the volume. Then, as I was going to put it back in my pocket, someone walked by right in front of me, and I dropped it! Luckily, the fall was broken somewhat because of my headphones cord, but then the jack came out and the iPod clattered to the sidewalk. I exclaimed, "Shoot!" (you all know what I really said) and picked it up. Luckily, the only damage I could see were slight scratches at the corners which hit the concrete. I went right back to playing it, and thankfully there wasn't any skipping or anything.
Note to readers: if you haven't posted on this thread yet, DON'T! You'll drop your iPod right after you post, just watch!;)

I haven't yet, there was one REALLY close call in computer animation class, I had it in my front pocket, leaned over to get my backpack and it slipped out of my pocket and inches before it hit the ground I grabbed for anything and got the headphone cable, and to my luck it held, the tiny jack stopped the ipod and held before it came crashing down on the hard cement floor.

I dropped it 2dai!
But it was less than 10cm (phew)
I was putting it in my top draw as i was going out 2 see i, Robot (great movie) the headphone cord got caught under the drawer as i was putting it in the drawer, and it yanked the iPod out of my hand and it fell into the drawer.
It still works, but it wasn't much of a drop.

I dropped my mini on the 3rd day, from about 4 feet onto a carpet floor when it slipped out of my hand. I sort-of half-caught it, but it did hit the floor (softened the fall though). Luckily it didn't hit any of the shelves on the way down.
I probably spent, like, half an hour thoroughly examining my precious to make sure it was OK. Not a scratch on it, and everything works fine :) I always try to keep my possessions in A1 condition, so I felt really awful when it dropped.

I was cruising on my motorscooter at 30 mph when my 3gen 10g slipped out of its case and my pocket and skidded along the pavement. Luckily no traffic behind me to run over it. Found it still playing with only minor scratches. No problems since.
Wouldn't recommend it though.

My wife dropped our iPod about 30 seconds after we opened the box, about 3feet onto hardwood floor. No damage occured on this occassion.
Then about 2 months later she dropped it again on the same floor from about 5 feet. This time it survived because I had it in iPodarmor! (see I learned!)
But then I dropped it myself about a month ago! onto the driveway from about waist level! It has left a good sized mark on the corner of the metalbacking and has a rough scratch now as well.
But all that being said it still works perfectly!
Thank goodness for applecare incase it goes wonky in the next year and a bit!

The other day I was in OfficeMax, getting some stuff for school. I was just going through the aisles, listening to my iPod which was in my pocket. So a song comes on and I wanted to see which one it was, took my iPod out of my pocket and it slipped out of my hands. My heart stopped for half a second as I watched it fall to the ground and tried to catch it... it didn't even get a scratch from it though, and it's still playing. :-D Thank Gd! :)

Lol I dropped mine but it's sorta a weird story.
Well my brother said ooh an ipod (he was done working on his car) and his hands were all dirty. So i unplugged it from the charger and it fell (like 3 ft drop) but I was holding the cable and the dock connector thingy was in the ipod so only the tip of the top part of the ipod hit the floor but it worked fine and everything

I have a Belkin case for my iPod. I was stepping out of the car to close the door and it sliped out of my hands, landed on the bottom of the case, which is empty, seeing as that's where the leather 'folds,' then bounced upside down and hit on the upper left front corner, leaving a small white dot where it landed, and nothing else. Glad I did it, now I know which iPod's mine :D

I dropped mine at the gym, no scratches or dents but something wasn't right. Every now and then it would lock up while playing Billy Joel, I thought eh... must be a bad file, after a couple of weeks this began to happen more often with other tracks, and I started to worry a bit. I thought maybe if I formatted my iPod and reloaded all my music that maybe that would fix it, I was wrong. I couldn't transfer more then 30 songs before the darn thing locked up, it actually restarted my computer a couple of times. I called tech support which was still free since I've only had my iPod for a couple of months and the nice Indian fellow on the other side of the globe had me go through all the procedures I had already tried myself. We decided it was damaged. Apple sent me a box to pack up my iPod the very next day, I thought this was pretty amazing since I had talked to tech support less then 24 hours earlier. I packed my iPod and sent it back to Apple the same way it arrived, Airborne Express. It was four days later I heard the doorbell ring and my iPod was home again, after opening the box I found it wasn't my iPod but a brand new one in it's place, I put my new iPod in it's iPod Armor case I had ordered the week before and except for an occasional dock it remains in the case. I was lucky, I have learned that you absolutely can't drop anything with a hard drive five feet off the floor and have it survive, It may seem ok for a while, but more then likely some damage had to take place.

I dropped mine after like a week of having it. I was sitting in a shed in my backyard that me and my boys drink beer and play poker in. We were playing poker and I had my iPod on my knee and i turned around to get a dip cup, and it fell of my knee. Lucky my mom put carpet over the wood flooring in the shed. It was only 2-3 feet so there was no scratches and no problems. My heart skipped a beat though.
And actually I have done this a few times while playing poker with my friends... I cant put it on the table for fear of somebody spilling dip spit or a beer on it  that would suck!!

So, I bought my iPod two weeks ago. It's used, but that's ok, it worked great. 20gig, 3g iPod, I was happy. I used it all last week at White River Amphitheatre getting the place wired for the Farm Aid webcast and media event, in the rain, running cables, the whole bit, worked great.
I get back to the office today in San Francisco, show everyone my new to me iPod, and load some more music on it. I head out, open the door to my car, reach in my pocket to pull out my iPod, and I kid you not, the thing SHOT out of my pocket, and landed smack down on the concrete, steel side down. I about freaked. I reach down, turn it on, and scroll to a song. All I hear is a rapid click as it starts to flip through all the songs.
Yup, it's toast. I'm looking for hard drives on ebay, but I'm not kidding, I think I'm just going to go buy a 4G 20 gig tomorrow at the Apple Store. At least then I'll have a warranty.
Pretty much the most disappointing thing that could have happened today. See what happens when I act all proud of something new? It gets taken away. ;)

I accidentally dropped my iPod (in a SkinTight skin) onto my desk yesterday. Well, it wasn't exactly a drop. I set it down and it fell out of my hand and "dropped" about 3cm (seriously, THREE CM) onto my desk. When I tried to turn it on it wouldn't respond. I'd only had it for three weeks so was pretty worried. We were going to take it to get it checked the next day but this morning my brother pressed the play button and the apple logo appeared! The battery had run out though.
After I charged it again, it worked fine until this afternoon when it wouldn't turn on again. I read the troubleshoot section of the Apple user manual and reset it, and it worked fine.

Lol i think it might be. The day after I posted here I dropped it again. well not really dropped it but anyway... it was in my locker (a top one) for gym class. it was ontop a pair of pants but under a shirt. I took the shirt out and my ipod fell about 4 ft to the floor. After falling it rolled about 4 ft on its edges 8^0.
Still works though lol
A three foot fall squarely onto concrete is an approximately 100 G shock load. Needless to say, any electronics will die in such a situation. A fall onto something softer will mean less shock. A glancing blow and rolling action will also reduce the shock. Get a protective case for your iPod since its almost certain that all of you will drop your iPod at some time. I placed mine on top of a car and foolishly drove off. It slid off the roof and hit asphalt, about a five foot drop. MY SF Bags case protected it and it works fine still, but the steel shell is visibly bent.

About a week after receiving my iPod, I brought it to school, and set it on the top shelf of my locker while it was still playing and with my headphones plugged in. as I was getting out of my car it slipped out of my pocket onto a concrete driveway, must have been about a three foot drop, but to make it worse i accidently stepped on it in the motion of exiting the car and slid it forward about 6 inches under my foot. So, for a little backround info. I am on the High School Golf team, and I am right now the number 1 player, averaging about 40 per 9 holes. So a few weeks ago, I was having a bad round, and on the last hole, a fairly short par 5 (470 yards) i was expecting birdie at worst (i tend to hit the ball a mile.) I hit my drive OB, so that was not a good start. The resulting drive, 3rd shot, was perfect, about 200 out in the middle of the fairway. I pulled my 6 iron out, the club i was hitting 200 all day. Well, striking it perfectly, at least I thought I did, the ball came up short into the pond right in front of the green. The following shot, a short chip to the green over the pond, was duffed right into the pond. Since we play a double-par rule, i picked up and took a 10 on the par 5...the first time I have EVER done that. My iPod was in the pocket of my bag, and with sand wedge in hand, i proceeded to take a mighty whack at my bag. The result was a huge dent in the back/top of my iPod, and a huge dent in the battery of my cell phone, Lesson learned:eek:. My iPod still works flawlessly, and was for my phone, it didnt fair so well. The service drops in and out often, the volume is extremely quiet and not to mention the aesthetic damage with the massive dent. Moral of the story, sand wedge + anger = severe damage to electronics. And, if you want to hit your bag in anger, it it where the iPod is not. :p

i was running the other day and earlier and had taken my iskin off for cleaning, so i had a nbaked ipod in a bumbag, i took it out to change the album and proceeded to put it back in my pocket and conitnued to run, to my bewilderment the ipod fell through my shorts and onto the concrete path. OUCH. i musn't have put it in the wrong pocket. Ipod has scratch on corner, but u cant see it now cos i have my iskin back on, HD is exactly the same, works fine. I will now keep my iskin where it belongs.

i dropped my first gen 5 gig the other day while i was unraveling my earphones with my ipod in my hands. to my horror it slipped right out of my hands, and fell onto the ground. luckily it was in my iskin and the only thing that i could find wrong was the center button not working correctly. to fix that all i had to do was push the button just a little bit harder than usual.

So much unnesscary information. Heres a summary: Went golfing, hit ipod on purpose with club, now its messed up.
Twice. Both time out of my grip. I'm pretty tall. I should be shorter. Closer to ground equals not as much damage.
First time, I was walking back to my university (where I live) after doing some O/P hours at a nearby elementary school. It's around a 3 block walk so I took my iPod out of my purse. I had a pretty strong grip on the headphone wires but was loosely holding the iPod itself since I was adjusting my purse onto my shoulder at the same time. But then the headphones slipped out of the socket and the iPod (concurrently), glided out of my grasp and crashed around 4-5 feet down on pavement. I yelled F**K (in an elementary school no less) and picked it up immediately. The front top right corner of the plastic side got pretty badly scratched but otherwise, it SEEMS to be working fine. So far.
That same day (or the day after, they happened close to each other), I was at the college cafe getting a sandwich. I walked in listening my iPod and was taking it off when it (again) slipped out of my grasp and hit the solid tile floor. Uttered F**K again in a crowded cafe and this guy picked it up for me.
Hopefully, my flakiness hasn't damaged the iPod to any greater degree than it has to be.

If it doesn't matter too much, I'd send it to Apple for refurbishing. This happened to my friends, and now it has to reset for about 45 seconds when he turns it on. He only found this 3 weeks after he dropped it, so, better safe then sorry. Tell Apple that you think you may be having hard drive problems, and they will fix it for you!

I was thinking that, obviously dropping your ipod isn't covered by the warranty, so by saying i'm having hard drive problems, what will that do? Get it repaired cheaper or just act as an excuse?
Just waiting for sister to get off of phone so i can give apple a buzz.

It'd sort of be an excuse, but may have some truth to it. You can send it in, they will examine it, if you get the all clear then nothing is wrong, if they find something is wrong, you get a new iPod!
How did the phone call go? Update on the situation please :P

Naked iPod (meaning no case) dropped 4ft onto wet rocks (boulders almost) while trail running. Still works fine but has a nasty dent on the corner (metal part) and some scratches. I'll have to be more careful in the future :) One day I'll get a case but it's hard to find decent cases here in Canada. All the cool stuff is in the states but I refuse to pay the absurd border fees, duty & shipping for a $20 case. *sigh*

15 feet.
Actually, it was in my pocket and I fell from a rock wall, but it still hit the ground nearly as hard as I did. Not a scratch.
ALMOST dropped it 30+ feet. Was climbing, this time roped up, and slipped, and I had fallen within thirty feet of the ground, when my stupid friend realized it was ME screaming, she jerked the belay so hard that my sunglasses and iPod fell out of my pocket. glasses shattered, iPod's headphones were still in my pocket, and SOMEHOW they were still attached, even as iPod was dangling out of my pocket. Managed to save it, but I'll miss those glasses.

Man!! How did all you guys get so lucky?!? :(
I had my iPod for about a year and four months when it went flying out of my pocket as I was running across a street. No case on at the time, and the HD may or may not have been spinning. At any rate, it worked a little bit after that, but after I reset it, it refused to mount and shortly afterwards was completely dead. (Oh, and did I mention that due to a long story, none of my information including photos and music was backed up??)
Needless to say, after my gruesome and painful loss, I am trying desperately to come up with ideas for replacing it (this sad event took place about two months ago, although it seems like forever already w/o my beloved iPod). I'm even going to try the free ipods site as soon as I get a credit card, although my friends won't be too excited about helping me out, I'm sure.
Let my story be a lesson to you all: always, ALWAYS have it in a case, and make sure the compartments or garments you put it in are completely secure and allow for no possible damage. *sniff*
I'd gratefully accept advice on how I might go about recovering my information (remember, it won't mount so this complicates things), replacing the iPod (I might be persuaded to surrender the information it had on it if I could get a replacement), buying a new one at a really low price, or winning one/earning one off a site. I miss my baby!!!!
i never bought my iPod...i won it :O so if i were to drop it i would be very upset cause i dont want to buy one....so im take good care of my lil baby :O

Last year we were at school and this kid I know found a cd player on the table on put it next to the window while the window was open. A few minutes later the CD player fell off the windowcill onto the ground from the third floor of our school. Then the kid who owned the cd player came into the room looking for his cd player and then found out it fell out the window. Not sure if it worked or not. But the thought of if that cd player being my ipod scared the #### outta me. Anyways no drops yet to my ipod.

in the toilet?? What kind of man takes an iPod with him to pinch a loaf? :-p j/k
My iPod has hit the floor pretty good only once, and I wanted to kill my cat for it! I had it hooked into my stereo and the iPod itself was sitting on top of the entertainment center in the basement. Darn cat thought the audio patch cord was her new toy, so.. there it went.. about 5 feet down, to the one spot on the floor where there is no carpet/rugs.. Believe it or not, it was playing when it happened, and it never skipped a beat. It was not in a case either.. Shock resistant model maybe?? heh

i dropped mine from about 4ft, first week of getting it. i swear, my life flashed before my eyes. it still works, but the chrome back, is now sticking out on one edge. anyone had this happen? everytime my fingers go around that part, i'm reminded of it. anyone had this happened?
I just dropped mine earlier on a concrete floor from a distance of about 4 feet (my belt line). I have a Speck clear hard case for my U2 iPod, but it doesn't offer much protection as I found out. As soon as I dropped it, the unit stopped working and the HD started clicking. Uh oh... sounds like a head crash.
Since the iPod is about a month old, I'll be sending it in for warranty repairs.

I dropped my 4G last night at the gym. I was on the treadmill and was resting the iPod on the shelf and it fell about 4 ft. Luckily the fall was softened by the earbud cord and it also fell on the treadmill belt, which isn't as hard as a floor. It seems to be okay...I use an Agent 18 clickshield case.
I gotta figure out a better way to use the ipod during workouts - maybe strap it to the treadmill with velcro in case of another drop.
I don't really like the arm straps and don't want to keep it in my sweaty pocket ;)

Never dropped my iPod, however, even after careful use it got scratched up. The iPod is one device that is impossible to keep scratch-free. Maybe its the way the plastic and chrome back is made, I dunno, but it's like the iPod attracts scratches. I bought iCleaner to get rid of the scratches and it worked pretty good. Then I put an iSkin eVo on my iPod to hide the scratches and prevent more from getting on my iPod.

I've dropped my iPod mini on countless occasions since i purchased it on 1/15/2005. though I've only had a major incident just this last friday 2 days ago. My friend and I were in the mall and we were going to walk to the movies from there which isn't far, but we were behind schedule so we decided to run to the nearest exit, the mall was closing and there were only scarce amounts of people still present, so we didn't look THAT stupid running through the mall and as I was running I had iTom clipped horizontally through one of those loops on your pants that you thread your belt through. And shortly after i was running the belt clip slipped off my pants(I use the white one that ships with the mini). And it hit the tile floor face down and slid for what seemed like forever and at quite a quick pace also, it must have at least gone for 12 feet before schreeching to a halt. At this point my heart was thumping as me and my friend were chasing it down. And as i picked it up and inspected it I noticed on the actual face and the ClickWheel there were quite a few marks but they easily were removed, however on the front and backs of the round "corners" there were several silver streaks of paint scratched off and climatically a chip in the bottom corner which showed the exposed silver aluminum shell. though the chip is relatively small it still exists. :( I would easily purchase a case or skin but I'm just too broke. I was wondering if there is a safer method to clipping the ipod on you besides the one I practice(stated above) besides putting it in your pocket. But all said My iPod was not running as i dropped and I've noticed no difference in performance before or after the incident. I'm so relieved that it still operates as I couldn't afford any warranty or service plan when I purchased it. I badly need a case or skin so I'm just going to be very careful with it until I can afford one.

Important lesson in life: DO NOT TRUST YOUR FRIENDS WITH YOUR ELECTRONICS! Or let your stupid little brother touch them...
Grr. Like three days after I got my beautiful JPoddess my friend and I were standing in a parking lot talking and for some tstupid reason I let her hold JPoddess. Well, it fell out of her hands and onto the concrete. I screamed and cried. It still worked but it had some bad scratches and the white corners have some black spots on them. Then a few days later my brother is being a jerk and running around with my 'Pod and I'm yelling at him to give it to me so he just drops it on the ground. Once again, scratches but she still works. Grr. This is why no one touches her anymore.

That's exactly what happened to me the other day getting into my car. My Showcase saved it as well. The iPod got caught in the car door jam and it came off of the belt clip. The clip was ripped off of my belt too, but it didn't break. The belt clip is pretty strong, but can fail, if you're not careful.

I dropped mine this past week. I was outside of my school listening to it, waiting for the bus along with fellow classmates, and it just fell out of my hands. I watched helplessly as it hit the ground. I had no case at all. I picked it up and inspected it, only a few screatched on the top left corner and that was it. I put my headphones back in to see if it was still working, sure enough, it was.
Now I just need to invest in a case.

Dropped mine onto alsphalt from about 2-3 feet. Knock on wood, but it still works. the Metal part has two dents in it, though.

Dropped mine on a tiled floor from four feet up. Just picture the classic scene from the movie A Christmas Story, except substitute the nuts & bolts for my iPod. :p
Needless to say, after making sure everything was alright with it I went out and bought an iSkin the next day.

I've only dropped it once. I had it sitting on my TV while my iPaq was charging right beside it, and I reached for my iPaq which knocked my iPod off of the TV and crashing to the TV stand and then to the floor. The thing must've fallen like a meteor because it took out a digital alarm clock and a model car on its way down. It survived without a single scratch, the clock must've cushion it.

I dropped mine on the blacktop in front of my house. I had both my iPod and my cell phone in the same hand while opening my car door and the iPod fell. It only has one scratch on the left corner, though.

Yeah I have dropped my iPod a couple of times. The first time was when I first got it. I was on one of those wooden swinging seats enjoying my music. My iPod was resting nicely next to me (This was before I Got my leather case with a belt clip) when I must have swung a little to hard. My iPoid gracefully slided across the seat and flung into the air at the peak of the swing. My earbuds were ripped from my aers and I went ito shock as I watched my shinny iPod fly across the deck. I cloed my eyes and hear a lound bang, ralttle and a crunch (It sounded like someone dropping their mobile on the pavement). It landed on a rought gravel stuck in concrete surface and slid for a few inches. I rushed over and picked it up and check the screen to see if it was still on. It was! There is a big dent on the top left of the white plastic now.
The next day I went to an Apple centre and bought Belkins Leather case.
When I went to school I had my iPod clipped to my belt sitting comforably in its case. The eardbuds were trailing from my ears and unfortunately got caught on someones bag clip. The iPod was pulled from its resting place and thrown onto the ground and bounced. Nothing happened to it at all thanks to the case!

the DAY I got my shuffle, my mom came home from work and I showed it to her. And I was just talking about it and all of a sudden it fell but I caught it RIGHT BEFORE it hit the floor. I think its a lucky shuffle ;)

I know someone who dropped his mini they day after he got it, broke the screen and part of the clickwheel popped out, he had a warrenty that covered that sort of thing so quickly he had a new one.
2 cases where I almost dropped my ipod.
1-I was in a computer class and the ipod(uncased) was in my front shirt pocket, I bend over to pick something up and see my ipod falling towards the hard cement floor, I grab for anything and I get the headphone cord in my hand........it holds, dangling inches away from the ground.
2-I cant remember what I was doing but I dropped my ipod from about 5 feet(cased) and just my luck it lands on my shoe, a couple inches over and it would have landed on another hard cement floor.

Dropped my iPod once so far about 3 feet on a wood floor with the iSkin on it. Not scratches or dings so far so it's all good. :)

I fell pretty hard skateboarding with mine in my pocket, and before i even got up i had to inspect my baby to make sure it didn't get messed up. Luckly the silicone case was tough as nails and nothing happened, or else i would have cried.

yeh i dunno about skins u see cos i rekon they ruin the look and feel of the ipod, which is a thing of beauty, but then again - they do have their uses!! thing about dropping it is - if its dropped hard enough the HD needle can touch the top hard disk platter and scratch it, corrupting some or all of your data. unlucky.

I was walking around the park and thought I had the clip firmly fastened, but the ipod slipped out and hit the concrete. I have a mini so on the bottom corner the metal is kinda pushed back and a little jagged. I am really upset about this. I don't suppose the warranty covers this. Is there anything I could do to "sabotage" my ipod to get a new one? Maybe I'm just being a baby.

I've had my 4G 20gb unit for only 3 weeks! It was a birthday gift. I had a rubber iSkin on it and the little plastic window on the iSkin cracked and so did the iPod's LCD screen. It still plays but I can only see about 1/6 of the screen's content. I almost cried. I love my iPod!

Dropped my beloved 3G 40GB in Tokyo a few wks ago when rushing to avoid a jerk at train station, and out of my pocket it went...down step after step. Seemed it fell in slow motion, and hit almost every stair. I can still remember that sound as it slide a few meters on the very bottom. *cry* :(
The iJing 1.0 died a horrid death that day. But chap who worked at Ginza Apple store happened to want to sell his (and use $ to buy a newer model). It was excellent condition so I got from him another 3G 40GB. :)
But, ultimately I gave it to my friend, and purchased the iPod photo 40GB and now I am happy with iJing 2.0 :o
