For canal phones with the foam plugs like the Etymotic...
You first pinch (squeeze) the foam to a small size. This will let you insert it easier into your ears canals, push gengly and wiggle as needed to get a comfortable insertion. The foam will now take up to 20 seconds or so to expand in your canal cavity and properly seal your ears from the outside world. U notice this effect readily if u do this in a noisy environment such as in a moving vehicle. If u still hear too much outside noise, or feel the phones too "wiggly" take it out and repeat procedure. Take your time to do this correctly (as with contact lenses) and comfort and sonic performance will be asured.
The Etymotic comes with plastic buds and foam buds. While the plastic "butterfly" buds are cooler looking, they pale in performance to the ugly foam buds in noise isolation. Hey, nobody is gonna see them anyways once they are in your ears!
Enjoy your canal phones!
