I just bought a really nice, $80 pair of circumaural (big DJ ones that go around your ears) headphones off eBay, and when it arrived, the plug won't fit into my iPod. I have a 4th generation 40GB iPod, that up until now only used Apple's basic earbuds.
The box says the plug is "3.5mm x 6.3mm". Can I buy an adapter that will let me use this? It doesn't matter if the adapter's big, I can use earbuds when I go out and nice headphones at home.

Yep you can. Usually the plug of a DJ headphone like yours (bigger than normal) is 1/4 and you need a 1/8 adaptor. Any local electronics store shoud have this adaptor.

Or you could just push really hard.

The chances are that it's a unimatch plug. Screw off the 6.5mm adapter as shown below.
However if you bought a Sennheiser HD25-SP, you're out of luck in this respect. You'll need to get yourself a converter plug (http://www.toddthevinyljunkie.com/products/product.php?id=249).

D'oh... it does screw off, thanks. I can't believe I didn't notice that!

The jack is probably around 3" from where it plugs in to the end of the strain relief sleeve, isn't it?
One aspect of using these DJ phones with long plugs with portables is that when used portably, it is possible for them to exert a much higher breaking pressure on the headphone socket (longer plug = bigger leverage). I'm sure it's fairly obvious to anyone, but it's probably worth mentioning.
Shown below is the unimatch-jack Sony V700 and the right-angled Sennheiser HD25-1. You can see the difference it would make in a portable situation.
