Hi
Just got the er6i two days ago
After a 24 hour burn in period and a 4 hour listening period, I notice that the mids and highs sound really muffled. Should it sound like that?
Granted, this is my first high end canal phone purchase. In the past I have used the sony ex71 and the sharp md33 so i'm not sure if my er6i's are defective or that i'm not used to the er6i's flat sound?

Actually the er6i are supposed to have some of the best highs around. are you getting any bass (if not, you dont have a good seal), experiment with ALL of the sleeves to see if that helps, also try angling them more upward when putting them in.

There's no such thing as burn in with canal phone, it has been scientifically proven. An audio engineer actually tested it out, he used a canal phone often for 5 months, and opened a brand new one- graphed both, and the frequency graphs were exactly the same.
You can try to cut the smallest tip of triple flange, to get a better seal. Yes it sound ridiculous, but if you call Etymotic, they will tell you the same.

The bass is definitely there; the er6i's are not bass shy
I get a good seal with both the foams and the triple flanges, but right now they sound worse than the ex71.

In your opinion, what makes it sound worst than the 71sl?

Since the mids and highs are really muffled, it kinda sounds like listening to a cheap radio, only with a lot of bass. Now that the burn-in period isn't an issue, I'm really starting to think that my pair is defective.

Do you have an experience friend/family member? It would help to get another opinion on the sound. We cant hear your 71sl, so what we say will only be speculations. But if you can hear a good amont of bass, it would seem that you're wearing them properly. Did you try Foam?

rx7_fan,
shouldn't you have mentioned your super.fi's yet? j/k. i searched headfi for super.fi, and you were all over it!
as for the er6i's...yeah, your highs should sound great and you should be complaining about a lack of bass. email or call etymotic...they are nice and will send you a new pair.

If you are having trouble getting a good sound out of your er61's, take the suggestion of snipping off the small outside flange. I was shy about taking a pair of siccors to them but when I did, it made all the difference in the world. It is an amazingly simple solution that works great. Try it before you give up and return your er6i"s. It it doesn't help then ship them off.
