I listen to a variety of music but lean towards heavy rock/metal. I just bought a pair of Shure E3c and they sound great with Dave Matthew's or Pearl Jam on my iPod. But when I play Godsmack, Mudvayne or Korn they seem to lack the punch on the bass end...even when installed deep into my ear after testing all the different foam/rubber adapters. I am going to return the E3c's and just ordered a set of Etymotic ER-6i's . I know some reviews say they may have less bass but I still thought I'd give them a shot. Is there anyone else out there who listens to the heavy stuff who has found success with an earphone system that punches the bass? Does a product under $200 exists with lots of bass, but at the same time doesn't make acoustic stuff sound muffled? Any help is greatly appreciated!!!.....john.

Try the UE Super.Fi EBs. They're just under your price limit ($199)

I read somewhere that the e2c actually had more bass than the e3c.

Yes. The e2c's are more bass filled than the e3c's but the e3c's clarity is much better from what I hear.

Go for the UE Superfi EB's, from all accounts, they are probably the bassiest canalphones made. Like a bass cannon.

If you buy the E4c for bass, you will be in for a disappointment.
E4c's are more known for their flat response and clarity than bass. Although they are somewhat better than the E3c's.
However, plug them in to a good headphone amp, and the bass really shines - very tight and non-muddy, while letting the highs come through.
I have been *very* impressed with the sound coming out of my iPod and my Pocket Amp 2 via PocketDock line-out and Shure E4c's. So impressed, in fact, that I'm strongly considering buying a pair of E5c's to complete my Shure collection.

Shures e2c have a lot of base as long as you get a good seal. I have never had a problem with them and Korn rocks on them. Lots of base.

Is there even such a thing as the E1? I don't see it on Shure's website. :)

The e1's are not made anymore. They are tan in color and really blocky. The e3's replaced them.

Don't apologize. I certainly wasn't trying to say the E4c's were bad, it's just that they're not huge bass monsters - which is what some people are looking for. There are some things you can do to improve that, though - like using a good external amp, or tweaking your music by decreasing volume and using EQ (there are a lot of threads on head-fi.com about how to do this).
I absolutely love my E4c's. That's why I'm toying with getting the E5c's now - I'm wondering just how much better the sound can be if the sound from the E4c's is so good.

I WOULD SAY IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR BASS AND OVERALL CLEAR SOUND IN EARPHONES. THEN GO FOR SUPER.FI 5EB. WHICH IS VERY GOOD FOR THOSE WHO LISTEN BASS HEAVY MUSIC.
