Just bought my first iPod and need earphones. So many choices! I can narrow it down by saying that I'd like them in black (or mostly black or grey) and I'd like them to have a volume control too. I will consider all prices. All suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

For volume control check out apple remote at http://www.apple.com/ipod/color/accessories.html

as for the headphones, do a search, there's too many headphones Shure E4, Etymotic, Ultimate Ears, Audio Technica, etc. Here's one you should check out.

They come in all colors to match your ipod.

$40usd-Sony ex51's
$50usd-Sony ex71's
$60ishusd-Shure e2c

Thats what I would consider taking a step up from the stock earbuds. If you go higher you come to earphones such as the etymotic er6's (black) the shure e3 (grey version) or the shure e4 (black version) All great earphones from what I've heard and read from. Good luck in your search.

The Audio Techinica ATH-CM7ti (http://www.warehouse123.com/ProductInfo.php?pid=AUTATHCM7TI-GRY) is the best earbuds i have ever used. These Audio Techinca really gives me very good impression, and they can produce good result on every type of music! Well worth the money!

Design and quality are promising too! Highly recommend these earbuds!!!

I bought the Pioneer SE-CL20 to replace my ex71. The sony ones have better outlook, but the Pioneers are just a bit inferior and definitely they fit better to the ear's canal. The sound is adequate with iPod and the bass performance is wonderful

Pros: The price(Only $29.95 in igearbox.com).
Cons: The cord is too short; with the extension is too long. Build quality of the cord is not good enough.

Check out altec lansing im616, they don't have a volume control.
The im716 do but I think they only come in white
Otherwise screw the earphones and get some Grados !!

Avoid the Sony EX51 and 71 like the plague, they are rubbish! If you want phones at that price point V-Moda Bass Freqs come in black.

Shure E500 is mostly black, and fit very well together with my black ipod video.

They are however a bit pricy, 400$, but well worth it and they blow away all the above phones.

Taking into consideration everything you asked for, including being in black to match your iPod and with a inline volume control if I read you correctly, then look at Skullcandy Smokin’ Bud Headphones. They are one of the few phones with a volume control fitted and all things considered they aren't that shabby.

Myself well I would buy another pair of v-mode blingblingblack Bass Freq's and smile considering how much money I saved buying decent sound :)

Of course, it all depends on how highly you value soundquality. Most people are content with phones that sound "ok" or "decent", hell alot of people still use the original earphones!

For those that "ok" or "decent" isn't enough there's always the E500 ;)

There's some pics in here so you can see how well it matches the black ipods;
