The mute between tracks is a noraml side-effect of compressed music files.

This may be due to the settings in iTunes. If I remember correctly, in iTunes, you can specify the time delay between tracks. Perhaps when you copy songs to the iPod, the delay settings come with it. Just a thought.....

The setting for the pause between songs is for when you are burning CD's (That's why there is the crossfader, to remove that pause). The pause between songs is probably the iPod reading for the next song.

Well, mascara, without knowing what software you use when you listen on a PC, I can't address that aspect of the matter, but the fact is that mp3s (and AACs) have a gap in them because of the way the technology works.

Both mp3s and AACs include, in every frame, a bit of information about the track - this is so that wehn tracks are streamed over the net, software playing the track can know its information right away. This means that the only means any software has for playing the tracks back to back is a workaround of some kind. iTunes has a crossfader, but this doesn't eliminate the gap, it merely covers it up.

As for burning CDs, any time you burn a CD, you'll have gaps between songs unless you're either copying the CD directly (using Disk-at-once copying and burning) or using mastering software like Roxio Jam, you'll have slight gaps between songs.

Since iTunes has a crossfader, can't they implement a similar function in iPod itself?

I've been reading about another portable device - the PJB100 Jukebox - which can do this apparently, but it's a lot bigger, and uses only USB1.

If iPod had this, I would buy one right away (maybe I'd wait until the rumored Windows version of iTunes appears - I tried MusicMatch a while ago, and didn't like it much.)

Many a virtuous iPodder has asked this same question, and Apple, in their infinite wisdom has... never bothered to address the matter.

Well, that's too bad - a lost sale for them. I imagine it's probably not the only one.
