firmware update failure. disk write error on ipod installer 05-03-23 using win xp pro

i have a gen 4 ipod brand new.
i want to use it as pc/mac.
i installed itunes/ipod installer.
the ipod updater is 2005-03-23.
i get this message when i tried to format the ipod using the updater:

firmware update failure disk write error

i googled the hell out of every single term.
i read through many posts on different listservs.
i tried msconfig and that did not work.
i think i got the latest version of ipod updater.
the ipod shows a folder with an exclamation point inside of a triangle.
i tried to reset the ipod using the hold//select + menu.
i formatted it on a mac and it worked fine...i want to be able to use it on a pc.
does anyone have any suggestions?

can you tell me you plug it to pcmcia card/pci card or socket built in to your motherboard... ?

try using highpowered usb/firewire socket..

recently i get this problem and solved by using a usb 2.0 highpower slot
