Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. I haven't seen this problem mentioned anywhere else, and search isn't bringing anything up, so I apologise if this has been covered before:

I got my iPod Photo 30GB on monday (4 days ago). I realised when I plugged it in for the first time to my notebook (Win XP SP2) that I only had USB1.1, plus when I installed the iPod the software that came with it was the previous updater version to the one out currently. I didn't know about updating at the time, so installed what came on the disk.

After having huge problems with amount of space used (I transfered 26 songs onto it but that apparently used 14GB! - said the same in iTunes too), and having just received a USB2.0 and Firewire 400 port in the mail today, I decided to do a factory restore to start from scratch.

I went to the apple site and downloaded the relevant update.

I followed the instructions in the manual.

I had some problems getting the computer to recognise the iPod with the USB2.0 port, but it recognises it with the firewire, so I connected using that.

It said I needed to run updater, I clicked yes.

It said initializing...

Then it gives this message:

iPod Updater 2005-03-23 cannot continue because there are other applications using iPod. Please close all iPod applications and try again.

This keeps happening.

I have iTunes open, as instructed in the manual when using Updater. And I have also tried doing it with iTunes not open too. Same thing.

I have done numerous Soft Resets.

What can I do to remedy this? I can't believe I am having a problem already. Not only are new iPods shipping with old software, but when you do try to update it goes all screwy

What could be using the iPod? All I have done is connected it to my computer. It says Do Not Disconnect. It is recognised in My Computer as being Drive D.

I feel like crying. £300 is a HUGE investment for me - and now it won't work.

Is there anybody who might be able to help me?????

Right - second update:

Turns out it could have had something to do with the external USB2.0 and Firewire combined cardbus card I got in the mail this morning. I removed it from my notebook and connected the iPod via my slow-as-hell USB1.1 port instead. When it got to the 'initializing' screen of the updater this time it let me choose what to do.

So, the iPod has been factory restored, is charging now, and I am importing more cds I bought today into iTunes.

Fingers crossed for when I plug the baby back in again.

I had removed the cardbus ports as I said above, but while the iPod is charging - not attached to the notebook - I have put it back in again. Seeing as though I am effectively starting from scratch I will see if I can connect via the firewire on the cardbus card. I hope I can because I don't really want to cause excessive wear and tear on the iPod's hard drive, plus I don't want to have to wait an eternity for everything to be put on there!

I will update if everything goes ok.

Final update (hopefully):

Delwyn is transferring songs as I type this. She seems very happy now she has version 1.1 of the firmware on her, and she is enjoying new found freedom with the Firewire connection.

So, I have learned from this experience:

1. When installing a new iPod, check for updated software FIRST and not afterwards
2. Use the USB1.1 cable without the Cardbus extra ports installed when attempting to either Update software or do a factory restore
3. Don't freak out too early and post random threads before investingating absolutely ALL avenues
4. Be prepared for a few hiccups along the way, but in the meantime - ENJOY :D
