I'd have sex with it, if it was female. ;)

I look at it like this.... The iPod is like an italian sports car (pic one). It is sexy as hell, has peaked the coolness scale and everybody who has never owned one wishes they did.
BUT... also like that sexy Lamborghini or whichever you came up with, it is finnicky, fragile, can be unstable and has phantom electrical malfunctions that cannot be diagnosed (or fixed) by even the most seasoned technician. When running properly it is as good as it gets but you have to be willing to work through the bugs that bite now and then.

HUH!? I've had my iPod for over a year now and have had NO problems with it. Seems that many folks here have had similar experiences. I understand what you are saying, it's just a bad analogy....

How is it a bad analogy just because it doesn't reflect your own experience? The little sucker *is* finicky compared with an average audio device (say, a CD player). I've never had a Walkman lock up right before a flight or important dinner party, but that's happened with my iPod. A quick glance at just about any forum here will tell you that people have had *loads* of problems with the iPod--most of them quite fixable, but all of them undeniable. Count yourself lucky if you've never had any of those annoyances. Technology has expanded at such a breakneck pace that I think we forget how amazing it is sometimes. Heck, sometimes I marvel that any of it works. :)

It's a bad analogy because :
A: I think very few folks here would call their iPod "finicky". Mine certainly is not. I had my iPod lock up just before a TransAtlantic flight and all I had to do was reset it. Worked just fine after that.
B: Fragile is a relative term. I've dropped mine down a 10 foot flight of steel steps and it came out without a scratch (it was in a Groove Jacket).
C: Has never been "Unstable". Sure, occasionally I have to do a reset, but once every 6 months or so doesn't make it unstable.
D: What "Phantom Electrical Problems " are you referring to? I plug it in, charge it and it works. I get about 10 hrs from the battery. Some folks have had battery issues. Those are not "phantom electrical problems".
Again, I understand what you are driving at, but still don't agree. I think you are coupling your experience with some other problems other folks are having (but I believe the majority are not) and assuming that the problem is universal. I also do not believe that "minor" problems are any big deal (this includes doing the occasional reset). As you said above, I'm amazed that most of this stuff even works.

iPod is great. Now I have access to my CD collection anywhere. Wish the battery power last longer though. Also wish it came with compactflash card reader.

the ipod is overpriced and overrated - at least for the type of player I need. I would prefer something with a browser function (drag and drop folder system from windows explorer), a decent battery, on the go playlists, and a much better price to space ratio. It may work well for some, but would be a big rip-off for me.
