I recently decided to purchase a new ipod from someone on another online forum. However, now I'm reading about how everyone buys extended warranties since the ipods are known for breaking down after a year or so (or at least have a big chance of doing so). Everyone here raves about Best Buy's $40 4 year extended warranty, and I've heard about one from CompUSA

My Ipod will come sealed (10 gig version 2), does anyone have any suggestions on how to get a warranty for it? Since I bought it from an individual and obviously have no receipt I'm not sure how Apple's 1 year warranty works, can anyone help please?

Can I buy an extended warranty from Best Buy or CompUSA even if I didn't get the ipod from them? Please keep in mind mine's is still sealed and I won't open it until I can find some sort of insurance for it.

ANYONE?

The seller is also giving me the receipt, it was from Target; do you know if they offer any extended warranty? (Don't forget it will still be sealed)

How does the existing warranty work? Am I covered for a year? Since I don't have a sales receipt how do I show them starting date of warranty period? Or is it by registration at apple website? And is the warranty a 12 month full warranty by Apple?

hi there - altho I haven't tried it out for myself your iPod is officially placed under warranty when it is registered online (see http://www.apple.com/support) the product serial number is important here I think...

If the original owner hasn't registered it, you can register it online when you get it--you're then covered by the warranty.

I have been told that no receipt is needed when you apply for iPod warranty--it just has to be one year from registration.

perhaps someone with experience can say more but I think that's how it works

But how would this control for people buying an ipod and as soon as it breaks THEN registering and getting their 1 year coverage at that point?

When I had my old 10gig iPod, for warranty purposes, I never needed the receipt to get my iPod looked at.

However, Im not too sure if it's true that the 1year warranty starts when the unit is registered online.
Because if that's so, UKingdom point is exactly right.

I was under the impression that the warranty started when the iPod was bought... that somehow when the unit was purchased, the cashier or person selling it would update the ipod inventory database or something.

I tried to buy a TAP at CompUSA today for my new and sealed MacPod 10 Gig 2nd gen for my peace of mind but they wouldn't do it since they don't carry them anymore...ARGHH!! I might try another CompUSA; any other suggestions?

I recently purchased a TAP at CompUSA (Sacramento) on May 16 for my new 30Gb IPod. You must show proof of purchase to complete the transaction. The only downside of the TAP is that they will not credit you for the full purchase price of the IPod if the IPod is replace by a newer model.

I just came back from a different CompUSA; they didn't require a receipt and sold me a TAP but it had to be a 2 year one, they wouldn't sell the one year one, and it only cost me $39.99. However, since it's for a 2nd gen ipod which is discontinued, they will only give me store credit for $229 (the current clearance price) should an exact replacement be unavailable. So no "upgrades" so to speak, at least without paying extra.

At either rate, it's good for my peace of mind. Thanks to everyone for all their help.
