is there such a thing?

a tape adapter that takes an ipod line out (from the port at the bottom of the mini ipod) instead of the headphone socket

this would a) give a better sound and b) mean you can have the volume down on the ipod thus saving battery

if you cant buy one... has anyone fabricated their own?

try using it conjunction with something like a SIK IMP or belkin auto kit. line out (amplified in the belkin but that can be bypassed) AND charge from the car's cigarette lighter. and they plug into the bottom of the ipod

Use the Sendstation PocketDock w/ Lineout (http://www.sendstation.com/us/products/pd_lineout.html)
Then plug your tape adapter into it.

Belkin auto kit has the line out and will charge your iPod, the cost is about the same. Of course if you want the small size or need to use it on a home stereo the pocket dock may be a better choice.
