My 17yo daughter brought me her 10G (new at Xmas) just moments ago. "Mom, the PiePod is sick!" she said. So I took a look at it. Indeed, it is quite ill. It started out with that dreaded exclamation point on the file folder, so I did a reset. Got the exclamation point folder again. Time to try a full restore. Mac doesn't recognize it at all, and the hard drive is making a grinding sound as the sick iPod icon appears. And remains. Sigh.
So I guess we'll take it on a road trip to the Apple store in Cherry Creek this weekend. Unless it's faster/easier to send it off to Apple themselves. Sigh again.

Cate! Oh NO! BAD news!! :(
Well, you have tried everything I can think of, and the grinding noise is a bad, BAD sign. Sounds like a crashed HDD (as I am sure you have already surmised).
Bad news again, Cate. Good luck - at least it is still under warranty. Hopefully, the Apple Store will be nice and help you out, but they may very well make you send it back to Apple for warranty replacement.
Let us know how it goes.

I'm thinking I may just send her little treasure back for warranty service/replacement. The Apple Store isn't exactly nearby -- roughly 80 miles. Ugh. Meanwhile, the question is, "Mom, can I borrow yours while mine is in the hospital?" to which I replied, "I can't hear you with my headphones on, dear. We'll talk about this later." ;)

Poor Cate, that's awful. Lets hope it all gets sorted out, ASAP!

Well, the good news is there have been many, many postings in the (old) forums of incredible turnaround time by Apple on warranty replacements. A week (or even a day or two less) once you receive the overnight return packaging from Apple and ship your broken iPod off seems to be common.

My turnaounrd time when I sent my little 5GB in a year ago was three days.
PS: "PiePod". That's totally cute. Maybe I should buy my son an iPod when he comes out of the womb. A 30 GB iPod. I could.... take care of it for him until he's old enough to use it... yes....

The box just got here to send the PiePod away for...what? Repair? Replacement? Hard to say.
Do you imagine there's any chance they'll be sending us a 3rd generation 10G as replacement? My kid would be thrilled and I'd get to fiddle with a new one. :D

Just an update: the ill iPod has been replaced, according to the repair status. It was shipped yesterday, so I'm guessing we'll have it back Monday, although it would be nice to see it today.

Last update: The new PiePod just arrived on my desk. It's a brand spankin' new 10G touchwheel with the "don't steal music" wrapper still attached. YAY!
With results like that it's hard not to break my 20GB.....
Now, if they only made the new iPods prettier like their counterparts I might actually want a 3rd gen 30 :)

Perhaps I should have clarified that originally. It was a brand new 2nd gen. 10G exactly like the one that came before it.
Ah.....sounds more like Apple now...(at least the current Apple)

Doesn't BestBuy give a new iPod (g3) if your g2 breaks?
Probably, Best Buy has great customer service, even if they have to take a hit for it. Like I found out they charged me twic for about $112 called them up they looked it up and credited my account in a few days without me even having to go back, which was a great relief because I live really far from that Best Buy. Oh and I bet that Z4 is nice :)
