Can't delete tracks from iPod Shuffle with AppleScript?

Hope I did not overlook this in the forum, but I only found threads remotely touching the subject:

I want to delete tracks from an iPod Shuffle, which I can't. I always get "iTunes got an error: every track of library playlist id 24397 of source id 24344 doesn't understand the delete message." when I try:

delete every track of myIPodPlaylist

(No matter whether i use library playlist 1, playlists, or just the iPod Shuffle's name as playlist.)

This works fine with my iPod Mini, but not with the Shuffle. I read that "delete" won't work when auto-sync in iTunes is on. For the Shuffle you don't have this, but I don't use "Auto-fill" and tried turning "keep source" on and off - but to no avail.

Does any of the AS-wizards has a hint for me? This would be great!

Thanks, jaco

It's been a while since I did anything with the Shuffle, but as I recall, the Shuffle's playlist is pretty much impervious to AppleScript. I wrote up some info on copying files here, which is somewhat related.

Doug, thanks for your hint.

In the tip you mention you write:

Quote:
you can get the location of each track in the iPod Shuffle playlist, which is the filepath alias of each track's file on the registered machine, and use that to copy the file from its current location on the registered machine to a new location. [....] Note that the files are not copied or moved from the Shuffle; they are copied from their original location on the machine the iPod Shuffle is registered on.
So it is not possile to access the file on the Shuffle by its POSIX path and erase it directly with a do shell script is it? (I hoped this would be a last resort...)

Thanks,
jaco

Correct. You cannot access files on the Shuffle. You can find the corresponding tracks on the Shuffle in iTunes (using info from the Shuffle playlist) and operate on those tracks/files.

I don't recall: does the Shuffle mount as a drive in the Finder?

Yes, the Shuffle mounts as a drive.
But I have no idea how to access the files on it. When I peek into the folders I find in iPod_Control/Music/ some Folders that only contain .mp3s with strange names like "BBIZ.mp3", "FBKN.mp3".
Accessing the location property for the tracks to delete in AS doesn't work because it is undefined for the tracks on the iPod.
Any ideas?

The strange file names are how the iPod labels music files. It does this in all iPods, keeping track of what "BBIZ.mp3" and "FBKN.mp3" are internally. I think you could use UNIX "find" with modification date, kind (for use as extention), and size paramaters gleaned from the Shuffle playlist to figure out which files refer to which tracks. This is how tracks are identified with the script Import iPod Audio Files, although I believe this script, as is, will not work with the Shuffle.

That sounds reasonable, but quite a lot of work for a simple undertaking like deleting a file... I'll try it when I find the time and keep you updated.

Thanks for your help, Doug!
