I am still trying to find a USB 2.0 SD Card Reader. If you know of a brand that works with Photo Connector please let me know.

I have had success transferring files from my SD card to a Cruzer USB 2.0 Flash Drive to the Apple Photo Connector, but I would like to transfer the photos directly when I am on the road without a computer.

I want to download uncompressed audio files from my Marantz digital audio recorder to my iPod. The Marantz records to CF cards and has a USB out. I want to use my iPod photo as portable storage, so I don't have to buy 8 2Gb CF cards. Although it would be cool to be able to listen to the files on the iPod, that is NOT necessary--I just need to store them till I reach my desktop and can offload them. I have the Belkin Media Reader, but the iPod does not recognize the audio files on the CF cards when I plug it in. Belkin also tells me that their new camera connector will not work for me. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to get these files onto the iPod, via either CF media reader or direct USB--> firewire?

I have been looking at the 30GB iPod Photo to replace my recently stolen 20GB 3g iPod. If I get the iPod Photo, I would definately want the camera connector if it works as I hope it does. I understand that when you transfer pics via iTunes, that it transfers several "versions" of the pic at various resolutions with the option to tranfer the original. My question is, in what format are the files transfered when using a camera connected via the Apple connector?

Do you get a full un-touched version of the pic with full EXIF data? Also, once on the iPod Photo, how do you get the pics off to your PC (Windows in this case)?

Hi ho... my first post.
yeah, i you do get the full exif data photo. You got to enable disk mode.

Once in disk mode there will be a seperate folder named Apple Photos or something can't remember. But the folder is definitely in the root drive.

I just got mine in the mail, and I can confirm that although it is not listed on the Apple site, it works with my Fuji S5000 (and I assume the S7000 and S5500).

The pictures moved over very fast due to the USB 2.0

In other news it seems to recognize my Sandisk Cruzer Micro, but it thinks there are no pictures on it. Does anybody have any ideas on how to get it to work? I tried moving the pictures to a folder called DCIM with no luck.

Has anyone tried the connector with a Canon Powershot S70?? I'm thinking of upgrading my 3G 40 gig iPod to a 60 gig photo iPod & would really like to know before buying.

Cheers

I would like to find out if the connector will work with a Nikon D2X. It uses a USB 2.O protocol. Is that a PTP, Type 4 or Mass Storgae USB protocol?

Hey just bought 30GB photo and the Apple camera connector. Works perfect with Sony P-100. It was actually alot faster than I thought after reading the posts in this forum. I transferred 59 5.1MP pictures (~2.5MB each) in about 3.5 minutes. Now I can leave my laptop at home when I go on my cruise next week!

I purchased a 60gig iPod Photo on the day the new ones were released last month and I just got my camera connector in the mail that I ordered from Apple. I shoot with a Nikon D70 (USB 2.0). I have a 1gig high speed lexar compact flash card full of pictures I shot this week. 391 pics total. After 35 mins of transfering (it was on #280/391) the iPod froze. The battery was full when it started and it was down to about 25% after that transfer. I'm trying again even though the battery is dead and looks close to 15% now. I'm sure the battery will die before the transfer is finished.

I realize 1gig is a lot of data, but it should be able to transfer close to the same speed as to my Mac. It takes about 20 minutes to transfer an entire 1 gig card with my cheap-o memory card reader. I've never tried using the camera but I will today and find out how long that takes.

I'm guessing that the first transfer would have taken about 45 mins to complete. I'd be happy with 30 minutes, and content with 45 if my entire battery wasn't dead by the time it finished.

I feel I paid way too much money for this setup to do such a mediocre job. I'm extremely angry that the camera connector took so long to come out. If it was released at the same time it was anounced, I could have returned the iPod & the connector. I can return the connector now, but the iPod is past it's 10 day return policy.

Basically, this is only good for who shoot 100 or so pictures on their fairly low resolution camera (4megapixel or less) and only have a 512mb card or less. Anything bigger is obviously too much to realistically use.
I too have a D70 and am looking at getting the iPod Photo and camera connector. I noticed you were unhappy with the performance. One thing that you should know about the D70.....while it is running on USB 2.0 specifications, it's transfer rate is only on USB 1.1. A lot of the prominant digicam review sites such as Imaging-Resource have beat Nikon up for just that very think. It's kind of mis-leading. None the less, I'm not sure that the transfer rate of the camera would make much difference due to all of the processing that the iPod is having to do to the photos.

I have been thinking about getting the camera connector and a USB 2.0 compact flash reader to plug in to it. If that setup will work, then I have the option of a flash reader or a camera plugged into the iPod.

I suspect the reason why this didn't work is due to the way that x-in-1 readers work. For example if you plug one of these multi-readers in to a PC, you will typically see 2 new "drive" letters showing up under "My Computer". This isn't a brand specific thing as I've had two readers from different companies and they both worked the same. Some of the slots show up under one "drive letter" and the other slots show up under a different one. I don't think the iPod would know how to handle this and is probably why it doesn't work.

I'm hoping that a stand-alone compact flash USB 2.0 reader like the Zio models will work. Unfortunately, most USB flash readers require 5v power through the USB port and I haven't seen specs on whether the Apple connector is providing the +5v that is standard for USB or not.

I saw a post above where a Cruiser thumb drive has been successfully used which would also require +5v of power from the USB connector for it to work so perhaps there is hope for memory type specific card readers.

Just to answer my question I previously posted, the Cyber-shot DSC-P10 is compatilble with the camera connector & works very well. I had telephoned Apple to ask & they said it was not but they must have just checked their list which doesn't show this camera. After checking the specifications of my camera, I was certain it would work so went out & bought 1. Yay!
