Remote - I'm Confused

I searched for this, but I got to many results.

This might seem like a dumb question, hell, it might be a dumb question, but...

I'm confused. What exactly does the remote do?

Do you plug it into the iPod, stick the iPod in your backpack and use the remote to control it?

the remote is basically just an extension cord with controls on it.
You plug the remote into the iPod, and the headphones into the remote.
Yes, you can chuck your ipod in your backpack and use the remote.
It only controls volume [up/down] Play/pause, and track forward and track backward.
there is no screen.
