Apps

Hello. I was wondering if you can install additional apps onto the Apple TV like you would with any iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. I would like to have eBay on there and other apps. Thanks.

Unfortunately, no -- at least not in its stock configuration. Although the Apple TV runs a variant of iOS under the hood, there are no official apps that can be installed on it beyond what Apple provides.

If you have an iPhone 4S or third-generation iPad you can use AirPlay mirroring to display apps from your iOS device on your Apple TV screen, but these are still running on your local device, not on the Apple TV itself.

Apple recently added Hulu Plus to the AppleTV 2 (2010 and 2012 models only) so I wouldn't be surprised if they add more over time. There is even a rumor that the version of iOS 6 for the AppleTV gives developers access to the hardware so that they can produce apps for it. That is just a rumor though and as it stands, apps can only come from Apple.

There are methods for getting around this but I don't recommend them unless you feel like tinkering with your AppleTV.
