I think the point was that $400 for an mp3 player is a pretty frivolous expense for someone who can't afford a newer car. I know plenty of people that live in ####hole apartments and drive $35,000 cars, this is kind of the same concept. I guess what I'm trying to say is that person with the expensive car and ####ty apartment gauges having a nice ride (which will continue to depreciate) as being more important than having a nice home (which, if owned, could actually make money). I mean, consider this...what if instead of getting a $400 mp3 player, that $400 went towards a down payment on a nicer car.

Please don't misconstrue this as me judging anyone, I don't necessarily agree or disagree with what that person said, I simply was clarifying the spirit of the comment (to the best of my knowledge). Who knows...maybe the iPod was a gift, maybe the car has sentimental value, I don't freakin know...I think we should just move away from judging people.

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone...

2001 VW GTI

I did not want to disconnect the radio because I do not have the radio key, so I just ran the cable for my ICELink to the trunkc CD changer plug, and all the cable is under plasic trim, so you can't see it. I put the iPod in the glove box in an effort not to attrace criminals, plus, you can leave it in the car and no one will know.

Another old Taurus with an iPod

It's okay - I've got a '90 Taurus with a slightly different setup (it's not permanent, since the car stays at home when I'm off at school). It's got a rather cheapie Pioneer radio (AM/FM/cassette) that sounds decent, but doesn't have an aux jack. I decided that I'd get by for now with it, rather than spend gobs of money on a new head unit, especially since the car will probably go to another family member who won't be iPod-equipped. This setup combines an iTrip, iPod, XtremeMac car charger, and Griffin iSqueez (I had a car organizer that sits where a console would be, so I use those cup-holders instead of the pop-out ones on the dash). Overall, this setup works decently enough for the driving I do, and if the iTrip does have problems, I can always break out my Sony tape adapter from my Discman days...

I know it's old, but I don't use it that much, and it's still in very good shape on the outside (it doesn't look like The Dude's car on The Big Lebowski)

I'd love to have a Scion or Honda with the iPod directly connected once I'm out of school...

Eric

Would an install be pretty much the same for other makes/models here? Like should I follow these pics and instructions to try it in my car, or will that be a complete diaster? Or better yet, has someone hooked up a Honda Civic Ex (~circa 2000)? All these pics look great, thanks for posting!

93 Isuzu Rodeo
Dual Headunit with Aux iPlug Input (wired to the Belkin behind the dash)
Belkin Auto Kit (Installed into the ashtray)
Ground Loop Isolator (Wired in headunit behind the dash to rid the buzzing noise caused by the belkin auto kit. Now its crystal clear with this installed)

I was trying to keep the total to play the ipod in my suv under 100 dollars becuase I am buying a new car next year and I didn't want to spend too much on something I might not be able to put in my new car. Anyway I bought the headunit at best buy for 60 dollars, 15 for the GLI at radio shack and 6 dollars for the Belkin off of ebay. All in all I have to say I love the aux input sound being able to see the album art and being able to control the volume through the headunit. Anyway here are the pics

1992 Firebird - The iPontiac

Finished a gift project for an offspring. Like another install I saw - using a Belkin lighter adaptor to power a dock, a wired in modulator, etc.

If he restores the interior of the car, I'll re-do the console and trim out the opening, otherwise, the rough look remains.

2004 Runner - To me, if you are not going to look at the iPOD screen or use its control, may as well hide the whole thing. But good stock-like install.

Civic 2005

Kinda ghetto but I used the belt clip and attached that to the small compartment right under the radio and it works fine! Now all I need is a good charger. Any recommendations? I was looking at the Belkin and Monster but I'm not sure.

Sorry I tried to attach a picture by using the attach file option but it didn't show up! I tried to look at the FAQs on how to post pics but the link isn't working either. Can anyone tell me how to post pics correctly?

click "POST REPLY" , then click the button that says "IMG". Take the URL and paste it into the script box that just popped up. Then hit "OK".

FYI: the image has to be hosted somewhere. Hope this helps.

Thanks.

I posted this in another forum..

Quote:
I did several 'trial and error' attempts to get the angle then took it into the computer and came up with the holder for the dock. I used museum board to construct the prototype and made sure it fit the little nook nicely.

After finishing the holder, I connected the PIE plug from under the console to the line-in on the dock and plugged the standard ipod charger to the outlet inside the center console.

You can find more info @ T4R.ORG & search for 'ipod dock'.

I can see the ipod screen fine from the driver's seat and use all 4 buttons and most of the touch wheel on my 3rd gen iPod. (although it takes a little time to get use to) It will be another story if I had a 'click-wheel' iPod tho.

If I need to have 'FULL ACCESS' to the iPod, I can left the armrest or just simply take the iPod out of the dock then put it back in after I am done.
