Earphones For Jogging

While I know the Shure 4c and Etymotics 6i - as well as the Westone UM 1 and UM 2 (and I am sure others) all sound great - what I am more interested in are earphones that not only sound great but will stay in my ears while running 5 miles (particularly in the summertime in the hot Las Vegas weather).

Does anyone have hands-on expereince and a good recommendation?

Forget about canal phones! Your heel-strike sends a subsonic shock straight to the eardrum--very annoying. If they have good isolation like the Etymotics and Shures, it's pretty foolish anyway because you can't hear squat going on around you. Things like cars, trucks, bicycles, dogs, etc.

I use some cheap Radio Shack Pro 35A headphones. They cost something like $20, are open ear so you can hear ambient noise, blow the doors off of ANY canal phone in terms of fidelity, and work pretty well on top of the wool hat I have to wear because it's cold here in New York this time of year. They also have a volume control on the line cord which is handy because I get stopped all the time by folks asking for directions.

I've tried just about everything for running (short of floor speakers). I think cheap basic headphones work best. The Sony MDR-V150 are pretty darn good too. They stay put, cost about $12 from Amazon and you'll have to pay about $60 before you find anything that sounds better. At $12 just buy two so you don't freak out if it rains. The Sony cord is a little thicker than I like but no big deal.

About the worst thing I've found are earbuds (any style) and anything with "sports" in the name. Ditto for anything marketed specifically to runners.

Are there any in-ear canal earphones that will stay in the ears while running and deliver a great sound?

I do five mile runs on some trails out in NY with my UE super.fi 3 head phones. I used the foam adapters and they don't fall out on me. They have a loop that goes around the back of your ear and secures them tightly (it adjust to your ears). They sound great. They cost $99. When you run i find it helpful to secure the cord on around the back of your neck.

I tried the Radio Shack pro 35 - didn't think they were that great. I was just wondering if anyone else had some suggestions.

I've heard that using sponge tips on an earphone will keep them in. UM1s come with the sponges only, and Ety ER-6i come with a set. I used the UM1s for the first time in the gym this week and they were perfect. No adjustments or anything. You eventually drown out the microphonics so it's just you and the music.

I use the super.fi's at the gym to run on the treadmill. I have no problems with microphonics and it stays in ear well.

You'll love the UE super.fi 5 pros, the "memory wire" that hooks over the top of your ear keeps em in nicely.. I have no troubles with them falling out or moving around, even when I'm sweating like a mofo.. they manage to survive my all-out attacks on a punchingbag pretty well
