PC or Mac?

Assuming it's the former, what version of Windows?

Have you tried connecting the iPod to your PC and Resetting it while it's connected? Try that first.

If still no joy, we'll opt for sterner measures.

Edit: Sorry... re-read your post. Time for Sterner Measures, I see. Do you see your iPod listed as a Generic USB Mass Storeage Device in "My Computer"? Do you have a green Safely Remove Hardware icon in your system tray?

Try the following steps:

Connect iPod to PC
Click on Windows key + Break key
(The system properties window will open)
Click on the Hardware tab
Click on the Device Manager
Scroll down to the Universal Serial Bus Controllers tree and right-click on it
Click on "Scan for hardware changes"
