Neither of these things is quite right.

1. ANY music works with the iPod, as long as it's encoded in one of the formats that iTunes/iPod supports, including the almost universal MP3.

2. Music isn't pirated unless you steal it. Music that you import from your own CDs, for example, isn't pirated. There is a ton of free and legally available music on the internet, and several more tons of cheap music from outstanding vendors like Emusic.com, a terrific resource for devotees of indie rock, jazz, classical, Bollywood, and other non-top-40 genres.

The only software you need to fill up your iPod is a web browser, and one of the best places to point it is here:
