Accessory Resistor

I have taken a dock connector from a Belkin Firewire/USB cable and soldered wires to all the pins. The pin 21 to ground is where the resistor goes to tell the iPod what is connected.

I know 1MegaOhm makes it turn off when 12V power is disconnected.
1kiloOhm is supposed to make the iPod beep when disconnected from a cradle connected to the computer I guess.

My question is, which size resistor would I need to use to enable vioce recording mode? Or, does the iPod auto detect a microphone on the Line-In pins?
