I think there's something strange about the way Apple designed the nano's audio on circuitry. I noticed right from the beginning that the nano's output comes on when I connect headphones (something that didn't happen with other iPods). I'll bet it works just fine in a nano or universal dock. However, existing products like the Bose SoundDock will need to be slightly modified to correct this problem.
If you have a junk pair of headphones laying around, just cut off the jack and keep it near the SoundDock. Also, I think as long as you leave it connected to the SoundDock, it should continue to have the audio enabled, even if the iPod sleeps. But let us know about that.
