I'm pretty sure it depends on whether you set iTunes to auto sync with the library. I set mine to manual sync and have been switching between two computers all day and haven't lost anything at all. Just make sure you don't set it to auto sync with your library. When he gets his computer going again, make sure his isn't set to autosync also, and he should be able to keep all his music.
