Regarding Firewire - yes, you can use it instead. Note that not all firewire cards are iPod compatible (i.e. Soundblaster Audigy is not).
Regarding your friend computer with iPod software - you don't have to install your CD on his PC. Just find an application "iPod Software" in his Start menu and use it with your iPod.
