you can usually get a pretty good idea by checking rumors sites like MacRumors.com or ThinkSecret.com. They give general timeframes that are pretty accurate most of the time. For example, I found out about the photo price drop and mini update at least a week prior to release. Bigger updates may even be reported much earlier.
