iPod will charge only via fire wire and with only sync via usb

About a month ago, the original sync cable that came with my ipod was cut in half, and I've been keeping it charged in my car since then, I recently got a free AMC usb+firwire ipod cable from a friend and when I plugged it into the firewire port in back nothing happenend I pushed the dock end up a little and it started charging but wouldn't be reconised so i tried the usb end and it'll connect but won't charge and i have to keep the dock end propped up.
could anybody help me, is my dock connector on my ipod broken, if so is it possible to replace it, and how much would it be

i'm running winxp pro sp2
itunes 4.7.1
ipod firm 2.2 i think EDIT: it 2.1
