I don't remember 100% exactly since it was a few weeks ago, but basically what I did was I opened up explorer, right-clicked on the ipod drive under "My Computer", and clicked something like 'eject'. Effectively this unmounted the drive so that I could disconnect it. Then I re-connected it to the computer, with iTunes open, and waited for about 5 minutes (I guess it took a long time for iTunes to recognize it because I was using usb 1.1 instead of 2.0 or firewire), and then a dialogue came up in iTunes that asked what I wanted to name my iPod, and then it started transferring my music...
