E.U. iPod sound limitation here's the solution

OK guys, here's the ultimate solution to your European iPod sound limitation problem. It worked sweetly on mine, only 5 minutes ago.

Go to TinkerTool (a small utility u can download at download.com) and tell it to display hidden files and folders.

Double click the iPod icon on the desktop.

Go to folder (iPod_control->device)

There you'll find a file named "Limit".

Send it to trash, and empty trash.

Unmount the iPod and voila, no more worries. Just watch for your ears coz now you'll get the maximum ur baby can give.

I am Windows XP. I had 'view hidden files' selected as a default for all my folders. In my Device folder on my IPOD, the only files i can see are Preferences and Sysinfo.

What's in sysinfo? This is an intriging solution....browse your iPod for something with "Limit".

If this works, man, that'll be great.

I nothing called 'Limit' on my IPOD as far as i can see. This is the contents of my SysInfo file:

BoardHwName: iPod Q14
pszSerialNumber: U23181AVNLW
ModelNumStr: M8946
FirewireGuid: 0x000C866A
HddFirmwareRev: JB100B
RegionCode: B(0x000C)
PolicyFlags: 0x00000001
buildID: 0x02018000 (2.0.1)
boardHwRev: 0x00000000 (0.0 0)
boardHwSwInterfaceRev: 0x00030001 (0.0.3 1)
bootLoaderImageRev: 0x00010000 (0.0.1 0)
diskModeImageRev: 0x00000000 (0.0 0)
diagImageRev: 0x00000000 (0.0 0)
osImageRev: 0x00000000 (0.0 0)

Region code looks a bit interesting.

Hello there,

I've got an iPod from the USA, here's my region code:

LL(0x0001)

Try replacing it.

Thanks for that, I have just tried it and I doubt it has made a difference but can't be certain as i normally listen with noisy traffic but now i am in a silent back ground. Do you have any other lines different such as PolicyFlags ?

This is what I did exactly

I have recently bought my iPod in France. Since I'm not French, I hated the idea of such volume limitation.

I reformatted my iMac with all registration (address) information set to New York. OS language, keyboard... all set to US.

Then reformatted my iPod with updater1.3

I checked out the Device folder, I had a file named 'Limit' with '216' in it and nothing else.
I erased the file and emptied the trash can, unplugged the iPod from the iMac.
I had a monster sound! It would hurt my ears at maximum output.

A friend of mine who purchased his iPod in Japan uses French OS and keyboard and don't have this Limit file.

I hope all this was useful.

Guys guys, the difference is HUGE! If you don't get much more sound, it means you didn't do the right thing. Maybe you have the brand new iPod and can't trick it the same way. Dunno.
I have the 2nd gen 10gb iPod. Touchpad one.

if you are using updater 1.3 it would mean that it won't work for gen 3 ipods.
:(
Or am i wrong... has anyone tried this??

Hi Penbat,

This method has been described before as unsuccessful.
Check the SysInfo file after a re-start: the RegionCode will
probably be set back to its original value.

Bye,
MaGe

Any chance that the G3 Ipod updater will read the region settings (keyboard etc) from the PC and apply them to the IPod ?

Hello,

that shouldn't be the case, since I am using an USA iPod in connection with a German Windows (XP) - the iPod's maximum volume is too high for my ears, thus, there can't be a volume limit enabled (due to the usage of a non-USA OS).

Have all the Sysinfo File settings been checked out:

BoardHwName: iPod Q14
pszSerialNumber: U23181AVNLW
ModelNumStr: M8946
FirewireGuid: 0x000C866A
HddFirmwareRev: JB100B
RegionCode: B(0x000C)
PolicyFlags: 0x00000001
buildID: 0x02018000 (2.0.1)
boardHwRev: 0x00000000 (0.0 0)
boardHwSwInterfaceRev: 0x00030001 (0.0.3 1)
bootLoaderImageRev: 0x00010000 (0.0.1 0)
diskModeImageRev: 0x00000000 (0.0 0)
diagImageRev: 0x00000000 (0.0 0)
osImageRev: 0x00000000 (0.0 0)

Do you have anything obviously different in the US (Policyflags maybe ?)

'Limit' file is found only on Mac version of the 2nd gen iPods.
Well, I know that this solution exludes many of you out there but hey still helps many!

One thing, since the volume level is very high now, my Apple headphones don't seem to support such violence. They kind of buzz at max volume... Will get myself some real headphones!! ;-)

Does this increase the volume for US/Canada users as well?
