Apple goes out of their way to do a lot of things, this isn't one of them. If you design a device from the ground up to be nothing other than a player for an iTunes media library, then that's exactly how it's going to behave. They would have to go out of their way to make things work the way you believe they should. Your problem is not what Apple is doing to you, it's what Apple isn't doing for you on account they have no reason to spend extra money for the few people who can't understand you don't buy an iPod when what you really wanted was a Sansa player.

I recommend it often myself to those who can't figure out that full iTunes integration is the majority value of an iPod.
