I'd guess the problem was just overloaded servers -- everybody trying to download the new stuff at the same time. I came back after a couple of hours and everything came through fine.
I think it's worth it -- I'm hoping it will resolve a couple of annoying though not crippling issues I've been having with the touch lately (since the last software update, now that I think of it).
