The first thing i can think of is... go back to your iTunes library in browse mode. In the upper-center pane, are those same artists listed multiple times there too. If so, there is a slight spelling difference in the names. There could also be an extra space in there somewhere. iTunes (and any other program) would see these as a new/different artist.
