4G iPods don't charge or sync via USB?

Hi,
I have been having problems getting a recently acquired iPod (that apparently had a fully functioning battery) to hold any charge (see thread further down "after restore, battery won't hold charge").
I just talked to the person that owned it before me and they said that 4G iPods don't charge or sync via USB, but with "another cable". He was sketchy on the details, maybe he means firewire, I don't know.
Is this information accurate, or is he taking me for a ride? The iPod is a fourth gen 40GB model.
