There was a thread about 8 months ago on this topic, well kind of. People were complaining when they sent their IPods back to Apple for whatever reasons, Apple would returned the same IPod all scratch up.
This happened twice for me with the same IPod. Finally, after the third time, Apple sent me an new IPod with no scratches.
I can only assume that Apple is trying to get rid of these refurbs with scratches.
